The Honorable Susan D. Page, who most recently served as the Chargé d’affaires for the United States to the African Union, gave the keynote address Saturday morning, sponsored by Christian Brothers Services. Focusing mostly on her role as the United States’ first ambassador to South Sudan, she shared her experiences in working to bring peace to the war-torn area.

First-time attendee Antar Salim, core faculty member and database administrator at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota’s Twin Cities Campus, listened to Page while keeping in mind his students who are from East and West Africa.

“To hear their journey and to hear her reiterate some of the challenges that they talk about that they have faced in their lives and their families have faced,” he said. “It’s a reminder of the need for humanity.”

Following Page’s address, participants gathered for one final time in their casas to discuss their experiences. First-time attendee Laura Cilia, campus minister at La Salle University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, shared how this gathering has inspired her.

“I’m inspired and excited to continue doing this work because I know that we’re all in this together and I know that my presence is valued. I know that the presence of everyone in this room is valued, regardless of race, religion, gender, creed. That we’re all in this together to continue doing this wonderful work.”

First-time attendee Brother Michael Livaudais, FSC, director of vocation promotion for the District of San Francisco New Orleans, is looking forward to developing ways to continue that work after picking up ideas at Huether.

“I think I’ve gotten some new insight into the opportunities we have as an international network to do something about those people who are on the margins, those people who are experiencing a kind of poverty and lifestyle that we can only read about and hear about,” he said. “We have a chance to maybe put some teeth in it and do something about it. Some very practical ways were talked about [/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][Friday] that I think have some real potential for school involvement.”

Participants will gather one final time for a Mass and banquet Saturday evening honoring the Distinguished Lasallian Educators (DLE) in the Region. More on the DLEs will be posted soon!

Huether took place for the third consecutive year at the Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza River North. Huether, hosted by Christian Brothers Conference, is an opportunity for educators to not only learn new techniques and find inspiration, it also allows them to interact, share best practices, and grow more deeply committed to their vocation of providing students with transformative, holistic experiences.
