Christian Brothers University (CBU) in Memphis, TN is celebrating its 140th anniversary this year. CBU was founded as Christian Brothers College on November 19, 1871 at the request of residents and the clergy to open a college in Memphis.
Brother Maurelian was the first President and served two terms totaling 33 years. The college functioned as an elementary school, high school, and college from 1871 to 1915, when the college division was suspended. Elementary classes were dropped in 1922, and it operated as only a high school until 1940. The college reopened in 1942 as a Junior College and became a four-year college in 1953. The curriculum soon expanded and continues to evolve to meet the needs of students. The college went co-ed in 1970 and became Christian Brothers University in 1990.
As part of the anniversary celebration, the Living Learning Center (LLC) was inaugurated on October 8. The LLC promotes and encourages learning to continue outside the classroom. It offers a unique environment for education which includes 21 private and 70 semi-private residence hall rooms, public spaces on each floor, a fully-equipped serving kitchen, a multi-purpose classroom, an exterior patio, study space, game and video areas, and laundry and recycling facilities on each floor.
Students can select from four living learning communities: the Freshman Experience LLC, the Honors LLC for members of the Honors Program, the Science and Engineering LLC for students majoring in the sciences or engineering, and the Sustainability LLC which is a two-year program focused on issues like energy conservation and environmental protection.
