The Martyrs of Turon and Tarragona: The De La Salle Brothers in Spain by Luke Salm, FSC (1990; 84 pp.). In a straightforward yet moving style, the author recounts the life and martyrdom of nine Christian Brothers and a Passionist priest during two stages of the Spanish Civil War. The priest was an overnight guest brought (almost by accident) to the town where they died. These men, most of them quite young, were taken from their communities and condemned without trial and with no charge other than being teachers of religion in a Catholic school. They were shot in front of an open ditch, which became their grave. Their beatification in 1990 is a reminder that fidelity to the vocation of a Christian educator may sometimes entail heroic sacrifice.
